"nobody even touches the features that this screen offers."

Sounds like some worthless features if no one uses them.

Just received mine yesterday. It's a work of art, but I got one of the 'squealers' - it has a high pitched whine after it warms up. I will return it and hope they replace it with a different revision (Rev-04?) that I have read doesn’t squeal.

uhhh... how about Sony FW900? Shreads this POS LCD in every single aspect. Bightness, blacks, colors, resolution, response rate, contrast, viewing angle, etc, etc etc.

bwhw h I've seen this run games, it's like poop on a stick.

#9, *surely* you aren't comparing a Sony CRT to this LCD? Right? Because that would just be silly.

Dammit Michael Dell you really gotta stop putting these things on sale so cheap! How the hell am I ever going to get the $850-$900 that I hoped to get for this monitor on Ebay, if folks can buy them direct for $780!??! Blast!

#9: You can't try to compare apples and oranges. The Sony is a CRT not an LCD. It weighs 92 pounds! LOL.

Not to mention the 24" Sony #9 refers to has a 22" screen, emits harmful radiation, uses 170 watts of power, is 70 pounds heavier, doesn't have DVI, s-video and component connections, has no card reader, no height adjustable stand, can't pivot the screen from landscape to portrait, no picture in picture, etc etc

    # 17     Posted 7:19 PM PDT 10/15 by ecarlson - Email: N/A - IP: Hidden

Besides, the Sony FW900 is only 22.5" viewable, and this is 24" viewable.

So, does anyone think Dell will have the really killer deals closer to the end of this month, like they have for the past few years?

I wouldn't get this because it doesn't have HDCP support! HDCP is High Definition Content Protection scheme which encrypts traffic over DVI. Without HDCP the source device (dvd player, even the next generation video cards, search for "vista HDCP video cards") will scale down your HD content (mostly HD movies and possibly HD TV shows) to 480p. Blame MPAA for this. Just because something has a DVI port, doesn't mean that it automatically has HDCP.

Won't there be an adapter for people who don't have HDCP?

Also which other computer monitors have HDCP built in?

For those unaware – Spatz-Tech’s DVIMAGIC, while sold and marketed as a DVI amplifier, is attracting attention among the consumer crowd as an HDCP stripper. The device is placed between your playback device (e.g. computer, cable box, HD-DVD player, etc) and your display device. The DVIMAGIC then pretends to be a secure device. Once the DVIMAGIC convinces the playback device to send the signal, it receives the signal, decrypts the signal, and sends a bit-perfect copy of the signal out the other end to your monitor. The result is a pristine restriction-free copy of your content.

There is a good article in PC World Nov 2005 titled " Most monitors won't play new HD video"
it mentions that "DELL have plans to incorporate HDCP support into future wide-screen displays, though details are scarce."
I was planning to buy one of these monitors, but better wait. Maybe this is the reason they are selling this monitor so cheap, to clear inventory for the new ones.

HDCP can blow me. I won't buy it, nor anything that supports it. If you automatically assume I'm a thief, you can take your content and crap it where the sun don't shine.

I thinks Hollywood has forgotten the fate of their Divx DVD Pay Per View system, and how it bombed. Sounds like another consumer revolt is on it's way.

Oh and if you have bought a high priced LCD, DLP, Plasma, ect, in the last few years you may have to upgrade to a new TV if you want to watch the new HD DVD systems coming out soon.

it sucks all the crap they put on the market such as hdcp just to make people buy it, then after couple years they push HDCP2 or whatever shit by then.

What about using using Windows XP with HD content material? Also, they really should come out with some sort of device that decodes the signal for users that do not have a monitor that supports HDCP. It should be done in such a way that they are still protected.

    Thanks.

why can't you compare a CRT display are to LCD display? DO people compare Plasma to LCD? CRT Projector to LCD Projector? What do you lift your monitor on a regular basis? Is it better to have something comeone can lift out of your house with no effort? LCD's don't last forever, the brightness is 1/2 in less than 5 years, no counting dead pixils. CRT's last forever. and the FW900 does 3.3MP True, the screen is slightly smaller... Picture in picture? WTF? that's a function of your TV tuner, yes? My FW900 has PNP, 2 inputs, etc.

Do GRAPHIC ARTISTS PROFESSIONALS use LCD's? example. Go look at RECENT any interview of ID software's team, (when they are @ work) and you will see at least 1 or 2 FW900's on everyone's desk... yet no Dell LCD's... why? maybe you guys are so much smarter than they are. Maybe they are idiots. you show 'em! no wait, maybe ID software doesn't have enough money to upgrade... humm... I wonder.

#36> I believe that you are completely wrong. CRTs have the same half-life as the current generation plasma monitors from JVC and Panasonic, which is over 20 years of seven hours of usage per day. I believe that a quality LCDs will last longer. 5 year half-life? I don't think so...

I personally know a couple of graphic artists who made a switch to LCDs and have never looked back. One of them has this very screen and another one has an Apple.

I own one of these monitors myself. It has zero defects or problems and I am completely satisfied with it. I felt really bad shelling out $800 for a monitor, until I actually hooked this thing up. The image quality is absolutely gorgeous. Made me just sit and stare at the desktop sometimes. I am an IT professional and a gamer and this monitor has been one of the best computer-related upgrades I have ever made.

    www.viewsonic.com/monitoruniversity/lcd.htm+lcd+monitor+longevity&hl=en

    "Longevity
The only item that ages on an LCD monitor is the backlight, which is composed of one or more tiny fluorescent tubes. The typical life of a backlight is 50,000 hours to the half brightness point-the point at which brightness is one-half of the original brightness, and the industry standard measure for product life.

A CRT ages in two ways: An oxide layer forms on the cathode of the electron gun, decreasing beam current; and the phosphor ages and becomes less efficient. The typical CRT half-brightness point occurs between 10,000 and 20,000 hours"

since you all want to argue, and i've done my research on all this and looked at many of them -- with the wonderful eyes of crazy professional customers... here is what i know:

First, Like anything dealing with color, you need to be an 'Educated User' and where you want things to go. For instance, you can not reproduce all colors in all mediums. Certain printers can not print certain colors and/or certain colors well. [why consumer printers have 6 colors now... for them light blue clouds etc]

So, Assuming you are educated like these people i had to deal with, then you know the facts and have to choose your evil.

    - LCDs are not as bright as CRTs
    - LCDs lose thier brightness.
    - They are harder to color correct overall
    - They have viewing angle color issues
    - They can have dead or bright pixils
    - They are easier to damage - say with pen, or knife

    - CRTs can wash out color
    - they trinitron's have TWO LINES through them [piano wires anyone]
    - they get fuzzy over time [2-5 years]
    - you 'Have to Degause them'
    - they do not work well in areas where the magnetic field changes
    - it only takes one strong magnet to screw up the color on it forever
    - they take up more space
    - use more energy
    - heat and humidity effect thier color
    ...

So, though LCDs are harder to color correct and their brightness is lost over time, less time is spent color correcting them over time, because you only have to color correct them ~once a year. CRTs should be color corrected ~1 a month or more...

... and if that's not enough for you, try this for fun...
flip the LCD up side down and look at the colors.

Flip the CRT upside down, and WOW, the COLORS change? hm, how did that happen?

For more fun, While the CRT is upside down, DEGAUSE it, then flip it back. Wow, what happened to the colors?

Have fun, and enjoy playing with your buds over at ID software. =P
