Been thinking of getting VOIP for a while now, only problem I'm worried about is the quality if I'm downloading alot. Will my service degrade dramatically because of it ? As for the carrier, I think Vonage would be the one I go competing with VoicePlus. Lets get a mini VOIP forum going on this one :--)))

Vonage needs aout 90K for voice. Put the voip adapter in front of your router and the voice packets will get prioritized over the data packets. I've had the service for 6 months and have never had an issue with downloads hurting my calls.

I'm wondering, should I get this now, havent made my mind up completely. I wonder how long my regular carrier will sit on their ass while I transfer my existing number over.

#2 this is partly true. Putting the voip adapter in front of the router will help, but it can also cause a lot of conficts with applications such as those using the bittorrent protocol. I could never get bittorrent to work right until I put the voip adapter behind the router.

If you're downloading heavily, it will affect the quaility of your voip calls, even if the voip adapter is in front of the router. Both parties to the conversation will experience frequent dropouts. If the voip adapter is behind your router and you're running a bittorrent client at full blast, you won't be able to hear a damn thing. Fortunately most bittorrent clients now allow you to limit your max upload speed.

My final comment is specific to Vonage - for which I signed up on Sept 10. I requested to transfer my existing number from SBC at the same time. The transfer is supposed to take 20 business days or less. I only recently received a tentative transfer date from Vonage - Dec 9 - 3 months after my sign-up - after multiple calls and long hold times. To vonage's credit, I think the problem was all on SBC's side, and Vonage isn't making me pay for my Vonage service for the period during which my number should have been transferred, but wasn't.

My transfer of a number from RCN to Vonage took nearly three months. I also managed to get Vonage to credit me back 3 months of monthly fees.

I have had vonage for a year now, I love it. I have the ATA plugged into my wrt54g and give that port priority. I have not had any quality issues.
An hour phone call while downloading shows no noticable effect. Plus Vonage keeps dropping thier price. So whats the best feature of vonage?.. getting my voice mail messages as a .wav file in my email. That shit rocks!!

It took vonage about 3 months to transfer my number as well!

Another point: Calls between two Vonage customers are supposed to be free. However, vonage had been charging me for those calls. Please make sure this is not the case with you.

When you disconnect vonage, you have to return their equipment or they will charge $40. If you plan to get the router unlocked, they will charge you another $15. But I think vonage is still one of the best in the market. I got voip from lingo.com - not as good as vonage.

I've been using Broadvoice(dot)com and two Sipura SPA 3000 units for 6 months. Love both.

Broadvoice was a little rocky in September/October, but they have seriously upgraded their servers and the Call Manager/admin portion of their service is much improved - as is the reliability of service.

The Sipura units were purchased from Voxilla(dot)com. No break in price because the units are not locked to a specific provider, unlike this device. Having non-locked devices works well with Broadvoice due to discounts for BYOD (bringing your own device).

Voxilla is also a good site for Voip newbies (kind and gentle VoIP forum). Good setup tools and guides. Phoneboy is awesome!

No affiliation (yes, really...). Just a satsified user.

Do you guys just use VOIP through your computer, with a headset? Or do you use hardware that allows you to use normal handsets?

Are there any hardware devices that allow you to convert a whole house (i.e. allow me to plug in ~ 6 handsets throughout the house)?

Also, when you sign up for VOIP service through AT&T or Vonage, do they add all the taxes and surcharges like they do for normal landlines?

They advertise a monthly price of $25-$30. But, what is the actual monthly charge you end up paying?

Okay I looked at my Vonage bill for those that are curious. The taxes amount to $2.25. $1.50 is the "regulatory Recovery Fee" and $0.75 is the "FET" Fee. I download heavily and have NEVER had any problems.

I've had vonage for about 1 month now and my original hesistation was spot on with what #1 was asking. To date I have had NO issues when downloading large files that are maxing my d/l bandwidth. I have not tried while uploading, however gaming (CoD and HL2) and talking on the phone is flawless.

FYI.. I have cable and get 3mbps down and 384k up and have the Vonage router ahead of my linksys wireless/wired router.

Hey PhilyT

Could you share all the charges on your bill, so that I can tell how much it really costs per month, above the service package of whatever they say (like 19.99) - how much other taxes and goop is there added on? Thanks!

Bort

On my CallVantage bill of $48.94 (international calls), taxes were:

Federal tax .02
9-1-1 surcharge .35
Gross Receipts Tax .01
Local tax 1.20
State tax 1.69
Intrastate Surcharge .77

$4.04

A farkload cheaper than a regular landline.
