It sucks for the eastern states, september 2005!! Why does the west get it today, and we have to wait almost another year! BS!

Some states alreay have laws allowing for free credit reports. i.e. In the State of GA, you are allowed to access your credit report twice a year for free.

Am I the only one having trouble? Also, does this include a FICO rating? I would assume it does.

PS: By trouble I mean I can't access the site. Not that I have personal troubles or something.

actually the new law is called factact
it's superceeds all state laws and makes it so everyone nationwide is allowed to get a free credit report from each of the 3 main bureaus for free. which includes scores for free as well. the bureau as of this time have yet to create a inter bureau system to allow consumers to order this free report. for more info: http://www.ftc.gov/opa/2004/11/factafrn.htm

I know that here in Ohio if you are denied credit for anything, you are allowed a free copy of your credit report.

It's the score that carries meaning. Having your report, while interesting to review, is useless without the score.

When you are applying for a loan, insurance, employment it's the score that's the bottom line. The details will only help/hurt if further review is needed or requested by you when you complain about being denied whatever it is you wanted.

#15, I wouldn't call it useless if it catches someone trying to make you a victim of identity theft.

What we need is for a disgruntled ex-employee/programmer to post the scoring algorithm on the web so we can calculate our own scores. I'm surprised it hasn't happened yet.

I'd be careful with this web site - it requests personal information which could be used to commandeer your credit profile. It's a nice web site, but if you do a whois lookup, the owner(s) of the service is masked by GoDaddy. GoDaddy is the king of fly-by-night domains and the fact that the owner is masked tells me, well, nothing about the company, and therefore I have no reason to trust the company with crucial personal data such as SSN, birthdates. If someone has successfully obtained their credit report, it might be a sign that their legit - anyone?

#25, are you serious? The level of paranoia within Ben's Bargains (and even more prevalently evidenced on slashdot) is astounding. It's a website set up as a result of a new federal law. It's not some kid trying to steal your information, man. So throw your info in and get a free report.

All you have to do is try and go buy a new car. The first thing they do is get your credit report. Take it or look at it and say TY bye. Or most citys have a credit agency that will give one to you free if you have ever been denied credit. Laws regulating when and haw many times you can look at it is agianst your freedoms and probably dont even exsist. Why can you apply for 300 credit cards in a day and they can look it up 300 times but you can only see it once a year? Thats almost like saying your not allowed to look into your savings account.. You own it and its yours..Screw the laws..Get it free and as many times as you need it

#25, don't worry, it is legit.
The Federal link #16 posted refers to the site.

Q: How do I order my free report?

A: The three nationwide consumer reporting companies have set up one central website, toll-free telephone number, and mailing address through which you can order your free annual report. To order, click on www.annualcreditreport.com, call 877-322-8228, or complete the Annual Credit Report Request Form and mail it to: Annual Credit Report Request Service, P.O. Box 105281, Atlanta, GA 30348-5281. The form is on the back of this brochure; or you can print it from www.ftc.gov/credit. Do not contact the three nationwide consumer reporting companies individually. They are only providing free annual credit reports through www.annualcreditreport.com, 877-322-8228, and Annual Credit Report Request Service, P.O. Box 105281, Atlanta, GA 30348-5281.

#27 I think you are a little misinformed. You state
"Laws regulating when and haw many times you can look at it is agianst your freedoms and probably dont even exsist. Why can you apply for 300 credit cards in a day and they can look it up 300 times but you can only see it once a year?"

There are no laws, at least federal or New York State, that limit how many times you can order your report, as long as you are willing to pay for it. The companies that look it up are paying for the service and need your permission to do so, at least for a full report.

"Thats almost like saying your not allowed to look into your savings account.. You own it and its yours"

Not true the bureaus own it. They are the ones collecting and disseminating the information. Now a bunch of federal laws have been created to regulate this practice and give the individual some control over what can be on the report but nothing has been said that the individual owns this information.

just remember yall that everytime you pull it it puts an inquirie on your report, and too many of those will drop your scores.

30.. that is an urban legend perpetuated by loan agents so you don't go shopping around for your loans

I'm trademarking my name, therefore the use of my name in their credit report would be a trademark violation!

#28, thanks for doing the research. Seeing the link on FTC.gov really allays concerns regarding legitimacy. #26, rather than attack someone who signals a concern, take a lesson from #28 who by reason of finding the actual link to legitimacy, resolved the concern.
I'm still puzzled why the Whois lookup is masked and why they chose GoDaddy. Saving $30/year over using NetSol for domain registration doesn't make sense for a full fledged legitimate company... Anyway, thanks again.

# 34     Posted 4:56 PM PST 12/1 by cswerve - Email: N/A - IP: Hidden

This site is misleading. The important thing is to get your credit report from ALL 3 bureaus not just one. This site only allows you to choose one. When applying for credit you never know what bureau the lender is gonna use and take it from someone that just went through it. You're credit can be squeaky clean at one bureau but bad at another. Do yourself a favor, spend a little money and get your report from a site such as yahoo finance and get your report from all three bureaus to avoid suprprises.

# 35     Posted 6:11 PM PST 12/1 by am777 - Email: N/A - IP: Hidden

# 30 - #31 is right, there are 2 types of inquiries, personal and those by other companies. you can pull as many as you want; most lenders will see them as personal (ie. you pulled them yourself) and ignore them ie. they wont affect your score unlike if say a cellphone company was pulling it. that is the reasoning behind privacyguard and other services where you can pull a report every day if you like (for a monthly/yearly fee)
