How convenient that they release their own version a week after they have a huge screw up with the Rio 20GB model and subsequently generate interest in these things.

It seems like an inexpensive alternative to an ipod, but who knows how good it is.

Wow, these prices are pretty damn good if this thing functions comparable to a iPOD or Rio Karma. I am really curious to see how it stacks up...

From what I've seen, the build quality isn't nearly as good as the iPod and the screen is smaller. I can't comment on usablility or interface, but I do know it'll be hard for ANYTHING to beat the slick conveniance of the thumbwheel thing on the iPod.

Stayed tuned for Dell to price them $20 and $30 (respectively) so that a lot of people order them and then send out the standard "Oops, it's not our fault so we're cancelling your order" email.

When are these places going to start giving away the hardware in order to tie you to their online store? More devices + more music stores = more competition which hopefully means lower prices.

Yeah great review of a new, small MP3 player...
Starts out:
"I have never owned an iPod, but from what I read..."
The most important part of a review for this kind of device would be a comparison with an ipod, and not just the pricing.

Almost 20 posts and nobody talks about capacity?? In Dell's link I see a 15 GB and a 20 GB player. Nothing about 30GB. Ben's typo, maybe.

What I wonder about is if/how any of these players impose any heavy handed DRM crap on you.
I have an Archos jukebox that is heavy and bulky but aside from that is a great player. It gives a lot of the usability features (playlists, delete/rename files, etc.) but also takes regular AA NiMH batteries so replacing/upgrading the power plant is easy and cheap. It gets something like 8 hours on 1800Mah NiMH but there are 2200Mah AA cells available now.
It also just acts like a regular hard drive in Windows and Linux (slow 1.0 USB) so you can manage it with the included musicmatch or write/buy your own file sync software. It only plays MP3, tho, no ogg, wma or anything else.
The best part is that it has NO DRM at all. I hate DRM. I want to be able to copy/move my stuff wherever I want and not have it tied to a piece of hardware.
Do you lose your songs if you buy another player or computer?

Dell is the Ishtar of the computer and electronics world. Both in web based customer service and the actual people you talk with on the phone.

I'm not convinced. I think Dell's MP3 players compared to the iPod's look like shit. The iPod is "fluid" looking (and in usage) whereas Dell's looks like an old cigarette machine.

DRM=Digital Rights Management
Basically, it means that you will not be able to copy/move even your own songs at will to/from devices that support this provacy intrusion. You may have to activate up to 3 devices as with Microsoft Reader, etc.

#20,
Standard Maclot response. Most people buy it to play music, not because it looks "pretty".
As long as it works, does it really matter if it is as "cute" *cough*gay*cough* as the iPod? (or any other "cute" apple device for that matter)
Most people purchase electronics and computers based on the features they want, and whether or not it does what they need it to do - not based on looks.

im sure the ppl at dell put the rio 20gb out and said "Let's see if anyone likes mp3 players"...after awhile they probably concluded "i guess so, well that was fun, let's cancel the orders"

I'm a PC user, but I have to say the iPod is far superior. It's worth $500 and more, though I got one a while ago from Dell Home for $400. After using the iPod with a Mac at work, I almost bought a Mac just to use it with the iPod. iTunes works beautifully with the iPod. The display of foreign characters is flawless. Now that iTunes is available on Windows, everyone should get an iPod. As I said, I'm a PC user, but the iPod is simply amazing. I lost my original iPod, but I got one right away even though there were deals for other mass storage mp3 players available. It is the BEST.

#31, And your comparison is based on what? I am not saying that Dell player is superior to iPod but there are no meaningful reviews for Dell yet. I'll wait for a direct comparison from a site like tomshardware.com before making my decision.

Something that most people overlook is the fact that the Dell DJ goes hand in hand with MusicMatch software. A quick perusal of Apple's own message boards (threads about PC ipod) show you that no one was happy with MusicMatch. Having personally used the MM software, I can say that it is a total load of crap. A quote from a user on Apple's threads about MusicMatch:
"Put a bunch of monkeys in a room and let them bang on the keyboards and you'll get better software"
Sounds like there were tons of connectivity issues, crashes, and the software just didn't make much sense from a usability standpoint.

It is like buying a Lexus with a kia engine/chassis!
