#1 is crippled. Great camera, great price. Not a DSLR, but for close to $100 you can't go wrong.

At least #3 offered up more than 6 words in 2 full sentences. I'm not saying you're wrong, njb, but after #2 already asked you to explain and you didn't I don't see why I should listen to you.

I have the A590 to compliment my Canon 40D. The 40D is hands down a better camera, but it costs more than $1000. I take the A590 on travel when I don't want the bulk of the 40D. He might think it's "crippled" because the frame rate of video is slightly less, but again it's a camera and not a camcorder. I've tried Olympus, Nikon L18 and Panasonic point-n-shoots, but this is the best of this years crop in this price range. The only other camera worth considering is the Fuji J10, but I like Canon's color reproduction. If your budget allows more, than the Olympus E-520 DSLR is the place to be.

This is a good camera if you are looking for a decent pictures without a big price tag. IS helps a lot. I bought it as a present for my sister in law and she likes it. The only complain from the ladies - the looks.

I am using a PowerShot A40 -- pretty darn old -- and I think it works great. I don't need to wait 12 seconds for a flash. It does take 4 batteries whereas some of the other cams take only 2. I'm not sure I would buy a cam in the 2-cell config. and see that the A40 is this config. Based on evolution, I can only surmise that the A590 is a heck of a buy at $109. I'm almost tempted to try one at that price. However, given the differences in power supplies, has power management come that far in a few years or did the older storage devices simply consume that much more power (A40 = compact flash)? Good thoughts #12--ha ha!

Yup, #1 is basically a moron. According to DPReview, the A470 is 7.1 megapixel, 3.4x zoom and the A590 is basically the same camera with lens-shift stabilization, 4x zoom and 8.0 megapixels.

"Flash recycle times have been the much-publicized Achilles' heel of the AA-powered PowerShots, especially the models relying on just two batteries. Tested performance improvements are slight at best with the A590 IS: a full-power flash discharge still takes nearly 10 seconds to recover from, during which time the camera is completely blacked out. Recorded recycle times from a variety of shots averaged just over 7 seconds with alkaline batteries. Switch over to 2300 mAh NiMH rechargeables and things improve slightly."
So it isn;t great, but not quite the 12 seconds mentioned earlier, although if your batteries weren't fresh it may take that long. All in all this looks like a good value to me. My A540 just stopped working over the weekend so I think I mayve to find out for myself.
