I still am weary of Vista.
Having had good luck with DELL for many I opted to build my own since DELL will not provide XP.

You can get XP Pro with this, but it adds $100+, ouch.

What's so difficult about slipstreaming your own copy of XP onto one of these machines?

#4,you have to have your own copy of XP. Theoretically, it cannot be an OEM copy from another computer. Paying for it is the hard part.

I prefer to buy the OS, just for the peace of mind. Interesting - a few weeks ago there was no downgrade option on the DELL site. Was it for all the machines on DELL? Or did DELL realize they were losing business from the XP holdouts - like me.

To save $100 I would get it loaded with Vista and Switch it out cheap at home and get the XP drivers free from their site. A little more work, but I need the extra money. Dell XP Pro restore discs go for around $20 on Ebay.

#6, I think Dell is bing strong-armed into Vista like the rest of us. But since Dell is such a large customer, they probably pushed back hard enough on Microsoft to get an agreement on XP, but they still are "encouraging" you to buy Vista by penalizing you for buying the supposedly inferior OS.

It's possible there is a real cost to Dell in terms of future support for the OS, but it ain't $100 per machine.

I'm not a Microsoft hater, but I totally hate what they've done to us w/ Vista. I paid the full price for a retail version of XP so I can install on as many different machines as I need to and know they won't be able to screw me. It will be some time before XP goes unsupported and a while after that before it's really not usable. Sometime before then I'm counting on MS making another OS that doesn't generally suck or else having an open source OS that doesn't suck in terms of software/hardware support.
