Your credit score will be lowered with too many credit cards.

If you think your credit is too good for today's credit-crunching economy, go ahead and face the reality when you really need a loan.

in for one... let's see if they actually send it.

btw, #1 is somewhat correct - having too many credit cards with open balances does hurt your credit rating. but having credit cards with zero balances (or balances being paid off in full) actually RAISES your credit rating over time.

Is this worth having another credit card? Granted I only have 2 right now. But I've always been thinking about getting a Discover card for it's 5% back on gas. But I moved about a month ago and hardly drive now so its a wash with that.

As noted by #1 opening a card hurts your credit score. But as noted by #2 if you pay off your balances it does it improve it. I don't buy stuff often outside of daily expenses and thus never have any credit card debt.

With the economy now. A new credit card will kick your fico down by at least 100. That is if they let you have the card.

And no #2 having too many credit cards also lowers your credit rating because you have too much available credit. They also have in the equation what happens if some day you decide to tap all the credit at once.

I have 8 credit cards and a credit score on Equifax of 766. Don't carry a balance and keep your cards around for longer than 6 months and your score will improve.

8 credit cards?! why stop at 8? - go for a full dozen (it appears to be the(consumer based)"American Way". Find a good thing and completely overdo it. i blame the media blamers.

Kind of strange. I had a score of 804 and it went down to 789 after gettting my Discover Card with the ipod deal last month. I just cancelled the Discover card today too. Damn bastards prompted me to cancel today because they enrolled me in a program automatically and I would have to cancel later so forget them.

Discover card uses 2-cycle billing, so even if you pay off your balance, you pay extra, and if you carry a balance, you are toast.

They make more off that than the 5% they give you back.

#8: whaaaa? If you pay your bill in full at the end of the month you still have to pay interest? I'm cancelling that stupid card NOW.
#10   noneyet99 - Posted 4:40 pm PDT 10/11/08 (111 Posts)
check your fine print on your bill, that is what they used to do, and if you are polite and persistent their phone support confirmed to me that detail (years back).

If you pay-off your bill by the due date, it's a non-issue. If you carry a balance, it's an issue.

#7, if you are really worried about a 15 point drop in your credit score, you are spending too much time worrying about your credit score.

Essentially anything you do in the short term will lower your score except pay off debt you already have. However, have a 0 balance too long, that will lower your score, too.

Get a card, cancel a card, both will lower your credit score.

Canceling a Card @ zero balance will still lower you score, Or at least it did to mine @ 32 points. Credit scores don't mean much right now or anytime within the near future as Banks are not giving any credit, period! Hold on to your cash people, and spend it wisely as you're going to need it.

If you search back, Discover More offers a $125 gift certificate from Amazon.com, or a 500gb external hard drive. I chose the external hard drive then but if I were to do it over, I'd choose the $125 gift certificate.

you have to average the three bureaus in order to know your real score.

I don't need a credit card, wish i could get the dvd player anyway ;(
#20   ez_goin - Posted 1:07 pm PDT 10/27/08 (13 Posts)
The last thing that I need is another credit card, but what the hell. I'm a real sucker for free stuff.
