with current newegg specials; $120 processor, $40 power supply + 2GB RAM combo, $40 case, $60 motherboard, $50 video card, $24 optical drive = a much beefier rig than this.

i was scared to put the processor in the motherboard, but the retail CPU units (in the blue intel boxes) come with heatsinks that already have the heatpad on it. No need to mess with messy paste.

you're better off building it and learning how to, it will save you oodles when you need to upgrade. It's not messy, and it's kinda fun Smile

While it does appear to be a better deal to build your own, you neglected to include the cost of the OS, Vista, in this case. Once you add that, the value is no longer that great.
Yes, you could pirate the software, but to remain legit, adding the OS will run another 100 dollars or so, at the very least.

#1 forgot to include the cost for the 19" LCD as well.

#2 and #3 - #1 also forgot to include the cost of time. Maybe his time isn't worth much, but when you're in consulting and charge $120/hour, it's now become a much more expensive "rig" if you put it together yourself.

Also, you could say that one could do it to learn or do it as a hobby in their spare time or pleasure time... well, then that of course wouldn't be billable time.

#4, if you charge 120 dollars an hour why are you wasting your time on bens?
